If you grew up in a snow-belt state, you know the drill—and if you just moved to one, you’re about to learn. Once temperatures get down around freezing or below, the glass in your car will attempt to spend the rest of the winter encased in fog and ice. No, not really; we’re sure your glass has only the best of intentions. But the road to miserable winter visibility is paved with them, so give yourself a leg up this year with our exclusive guide to cold-weather clarity.

Keep your glass clean.

Cleanliness may seem beside the point, but guess what: if you let any kind of film build up on your glass, you’re basically creating a big moisture-magnet. You can see this for yourself if you leave finger tracks on a filmy windshield at night—the next morning’s condensation will flock everywhere except where your fingers wiped the film away. So do yourself a favor and put the Windex to your glass every week or so. You’ll be surprised by what a difference it can make.

Don’t be damp.

Ever hopped into your car after a workout and noticed how the gym sweat steams up your windows? This can be a real issue in below-freezing temperatures, which can turn your moisture into the dreaded internal window frost. Feel free to bust out a scraper and do your thing on the windshield while you drive home—it’s a common sight in snowy climes—but we strongly recommend making your life easier (and safer) by toweling off thoroughly beforehand, and of course tossing any wet or damp fabric in the trunk.

Turn up the A/C.

Now hear this: air-conditioning—yes, with the heat cranked up when it’s cold—is your windshield-clearing friend. Why? Long story short, it pumps out air that’s considerably drier than the air in your cabin. Since the point is to get rid of condensation buildup, you want the driest air you can get. Sure, the air-conditioner uses incrementally more fuel, but employing it as a defroster has the fringe benefit of keeping your A/C system lubricated through the winter (which is partly why it comes on automatically when defrost is selected in modern cars). Just make sure your airflow control is set to fresh, as recycling the stale, humid air in your cabin would kind of defeat the purpose.

When Should I Replace My Tires?

"The Lincoln penny tread depth test has been touted for years to be a suitable method of determining when it's time to get new tires. It's based on the premise you're driving on legal tread depths anytime the top of Lincoln's head is obscured by the tread and that a tire's ability to grip the road isn't greatly reduced in adverse conditions (rain, slush and snow) until the tread wears to about 2/32" of remaining depth. It then maintains you're ready for new tires at 2/32" and can see the penny above Lincoln's head. (See Photo #1) Is it as simple as that? No. Read on.

A driver's ability to control their vehicle depends on the traction between their tires and the road. Tires don't require tread designs or even much tread depth to deliver traction on dry roads. A practical example of this is the racing slicks used on stock cars and open-wheel racers that provide traction at over 200 mph. However, tires do require tread designs to generate traction on wet, slushy and snow-covered roads. Liquids can't be compressed and require time and energy to move them out of the way as our tires drive through them. Those same racing slicks would lose traction at amazingly slow speeds anytime something prevented them from maintaining contact with the road.

So a tread design is necessary to direct water and slush from between the tire and the road, as well as provide edges that bite into snow. But that's only half the equation; because we've seen that tread depth also contributes to how well the design does its job.

The air our tires encounter at highway speeds can easily be compressed and moved out of the way with relative ease. However the same isn't true of liquids. When water collects on the road surface during rainstorms, the water depth, vehicle speed and vehicle weight, as well as the tires' tread designs and tread depths collectively determine when and if the tires will be forced to hydroplane and how quickly they can stop a vehicle.

A typical passenger car tire has about twenty square inches of total footprint surface and begins with about 1/3" of tread depth. While the majority of the footprint surface is made up of the rubber that grips the road, the remainder is the void of the grooves that make up the tread design. How To Change Your Car's Filters

"Any part of the car that takes in fluids or air from the environment should have a way of separating the good from the bad, of taking in only what benefits the mechanism and leaving the rest behind. This is why cars have air filters and fuel filters. True, they require regular looking after but this is one of the simplest and least expensive — and most important — maintenance procedures you can perform for your car. Changing your car's filters on a regular basis can have a significant impact on engine life and performance.

We'd like to walk you through a basic filter change. It doesn't take long, saves you money, and sends your car down the road refreshed and renewed. A clogged air or fuel filter can cause poor performance, poor fuel mileage and reduced engine life. This simple procedure guards against that.

How often should you do this? Check your owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommended intervals. If the manual's not available, a good rule of thumb is: air filter replacement every 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first); fuel filter replacement every 2 years or 24,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Changing the Air Filter

If nothing else, learn how to change your own air filter. It's quick and easy and saves you money.

How so? Chances are, the last time you went to the Quick Lube-n-Tune place the technician probably hit you up with, "Hey Bud, you need a new air filter." After which you nodded and watched as he added it to the invoice. How much? $17.99? $23.99? Heck, we've even seen $27.99.

The chief purpose of Edmunds.com is to empower the consumer. Don't let them stick it to you. Learn to say no — there's no law against it. Just say "Thanks, I'll look into it," and go home after the oil change and perform this procedure yourself — if, in fact, it really needs to be done.

First, park your car in the shade and pop the hood. Prop it up so it doesn't bang you in the head, then let the engine cool for a few minutes.

While it's cooling, go get your tools. You'll need very few for this procedure — grab a butter knife, two medium-sized screwdrivers, one standard and one Phillips, and head back to the car.

The air filter is typically enclosed in a black plastic casing near the center-top of the engine (sometimes, however, it will be off to the side). It should be the largest non-metal assembly you see, about the size of a breadbox. Find it? Good. Now, open it.

How? Well, most of them are held together by a couple of large metal clips on the side. Slide the butter knife or flat-headed screwdriver between the casing and the clip and then pry the clip away. Continue around the case's perimeter, loosening all the retaining clips which should allow you to open the case up. Hydroplaning: The Role Tires Play

"Hydroplaning happens when one or more tires is lifted from the road by a wedge of water that gets trapped in front of and under a tire as the vehicle drives through water. Hydroplaning most frequently occurs during heavy rainstorms when water creates puddles on the highway or expressway. In addition to the accompanying splash and scaring the heck out of the driver, hydroplaning typically causes the steering wheel to jerk and the vehicle to abruptly pull towards the puddle.

The speed at which a tire hydroplanes is a function of water depth, vehicle speed, vehicle weight, tire width, tread depth and tread design. It depends on how much water has to be removed, how much weight is pressing down on the tires and how efficient the tread design is at evacuating water. While deeper water, higher speeds, lighter vehicles, wider tires, less tread depth and less efficient tread designs will cause tires to hydroplane at lower speeds; all tires will be forced to hydroplane at some speed.
As a rule, tread design affects hydroplaning resistance at high speeds and in deep water. Tread compound affects wet traction at lower speeds or in shallow water." [Continue reading...]

Co-owners Mike D’Andrea and Mark Meadows of Miracle Motor Mart were named the Quality Dealer of the Year for 2012 by the Ohio Independent Auto Dealer Association (OIADA). Miracle Motor Mart was selected Quality Dealer of the Year from the final three finalists at the Association’s annual awards banquet on Saturday December 3, 2011.
As Quality Dealer of the Year, D’Andrea and Meadows will go on to represent OIADA and the state of Ohio at the National Independent Auto Dealer Association’s June convention in June at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Some of the criteria that distinguish the candidates nominated for this prestigious award are as follows:

v Demonstrate a willingness to be helpful in performing Association duties when asked by the various state association leaders.
v Display a willingness to serve the Used Car Industry through helpful service to fellow dealers by sharing his/her knowledge, talent and experience.
v Willingness to make a commitment to attend the annual State and/or National Convention & Expo’s.
v Have the necessary credentials to compete at the national level, since he/she will be representing their state association in the national competition.

Miracle Motor Mart is a Columbus-area auto dealership with two locations specializing in pre-owned vehicles. Mike D’Andrea opened Miracle Motor Mart in 1988; Meadows joined as co-owner in 2007. In 2010 the team added a second East Main Street location, equipped with a certified parts and service department, to their original Morse Road location.
D’Andrea, Meadows and their team received the award with gratitude, knowing how many other dealers were nominated for the award. “It is humbling to know that out more than 5,000 dealers in Ohio we have been chosen as one of the best,” said D’Andrea. “It is a testament to the hard work of all the people we surround ourselves with everyday.”
In a statement to his employees and customers, D’Andrea went on to thank the people who have supported Miracle Motor Mart along the way. “I am grateful for all of the people, past and present, who spent many years helping us build a solid foundation”. D’Andrea closed his statement by explaining that while he is pleased with the success of the moment, he looks toward the future with equal enthusiasm. “We are thankful and proud of all of our co-workers, employees and customers for the trust and support over the past 23 years,” D’Andrea said. “We hope that the next 23 years are as enjoyable as the first.”

10 Simple Ways to Get Your Car Ready for Winter

1. Get the right kind of oil change. Are you approaching the time for a 30,000-mile full service for your vehicle? If so, don’t procrastinate! Among other things, the service should include an oil change, and the oil used should have the right viscosity, or thickness, for your vehicle at this time of year. Oil tends to thicken as it gets colder, and if it’s too thick it won’t do the best job of keeping your engine lubricated. Check your owner’s manual for guidance about which oil to use in different climates and temperatures.

2. Make sure you can see. When’s the last time you replaced your windshield wiper blades? They usually work effectively for about one year, so be sure to invest in some new ones if you’re due. Here’s another important step to take before you find yourself struggling to see in a blinding storm: Fill up your windshield washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid. (Plain water won’t do the trick at this time of year because it freezes.) Also check to see that your heater and defroster are working properly so you can keep the windshield nice and clear.

3. Give your battery a little TLC. This is an ideal time of year to make sure your battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free and that your battery has all the water it needs. If your battery is more than three years old, have a certified repair shop test its ability to hold a charge.
